Self made Power Supply, based on a DPS5015 module from AliExpress.

The DPS5015 is a programmable step-down converter: it takes a DC input and provides an adjustable output with constant-voltage and constant-current modes, plus a colour display and a rotary encoder for setting the values. On paper it does up to 50 V / 5 A / 360 W — in practice the output ceiling is set by the input supply, since a buck converter can only step down. Fed from the industrial mains PSU in this build it covers the range I need for testing LED strips, controllers and small prototypes, and the adjustable current limit is the feature I wouldn’t want to miss anymore: it turns every accidental short circuit into a harmless current reading instead of magic smoke.

The build

Everything lives in a simple plywood case:

  • an industrial fanless mains PSU provides the DC input for the module
  • the DPS5015 board is mounted with its display and rotary encoder facing the front panel
  • banana jacks on the front carry the output, a C14 socket on the back the mains input
  • a pattern of drilled holes on the sides provides ventilation

The whole thing cost a fraction of a commercial lab supply and does everything I need on my workbench.
