When I got my new espresso machine in 2015 I had quite some problems with the fluctuating temperature of the boiler.

So I decided to replace the bimetal thermostat with a PID controller.

I installed the controller in an external plastic box, so I didn’t have to cut any holes in the machine (just in case I want to sell the machine).

Second modification was adding a cheap LED light source.

Why the PID?

From the factory the Silvia controls its boiler with simple bimetal thermostats. They work, but they only know two states: full heat on until the setpoint, then fully off. The result is a temperature sawtooth of several degrees around the target — and the brew temperature drifting between sour and bitter within a single shot.

A PID controller replaces that bang-bang behaviour with proportional control: it watches the actual boiler temperature and pulses the heating element through a solid state relay, holding the temperature within roughly a degree.

The modification

The machine was fully dismantled first. All internal wiring of the Silvia is plugged, not soldered, so the teardown is straightforward: shell off, wiring harness unplugged, boiler accessible.

The stock thermostats on the boiler were disconnected and replaced by a thermocouple sensor fixed directly to the boiler. The heating element is now switched by a solid state relay instead of the thermostat contacts — SSRs are silent, don’t wear out, and can handle the fast pulse-width switching the PID needs.

External controller box

Instead of cutting the stainless housing, the PID lives in an external box attached behind the machine. The display sits next to the Rancilio logo, so set and actual temperature are visible at a glance while brewing. If I ever sell the machine, it can be reverted to stock within an hour.

The area under the group head was always in shadow, so I added a cheap LED strip powered from the machine’s supply. It makes filling the tank and cleaning the drip tray a lot easier — and it looks nice.
